Why the Strongest Applications Will Be Built by Coalitions

Michigan’s 2026 Real World Deployment and Test Site Grants are now open through the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform (MMFP). While the program offers meaningful funding for mobility and transportation innovation, the signal for this cycle is clear: the State of Michigan is prioritizing coalitions that can execute across sectors, jurisdictions, and systems.

At Thelenwood Consulting, our primary objective in 2026 is helping organizations move beyond individual pilots and toward aligned, deployment-ready coalitions that can stand up to technical, financial, and public-sector scrutiny. This grant cycle reflects exactly why that work matters.

Two Deployment Pathways — Both Require Strong Integration

The 2026 program supports two funding tracks. While they differ in deployment environment, both rely heavily on partnership structure, interoperability, and shared accountability.

  1. Test Site Grants

Test Site Grants support mobility projects deployed in closed environments and require partnership with one of Michigan’s pre-approved test sites. Typical awards range from $50,000–$150,000, with up to $500,000 available.

  1. Real-World Deployment Grants

Real-World Deployment Grants support projects operating in public spaces and require partnerships with municipalities and/or state agencies. Typical awards range from $150,000–$250,000, with flexibility up to $500,000

Timeline: Coalition Readiness Matters More Than Speed

Round 1 applications open January 26, 2026, with a priority deadline of February 27, 2026. Selections will be announced March 26, 2026. Round 2 applications close May 15, 2026, with selections announced June 12, 2026.

How Applications Are Scored: This Is Not a Solo Sport

Applications are evaluated through a 100-point scoring framework, including external expert review and a final interagency selection committee. High-weighted categories emphasize project teams, partnerships, interoperability, financial sustainability, and alignment with Michigan’s State Mobility Plan.

Why Coalition Design Is the Differentiator in 2026

Grants like this reward teams that treat deployment as a shared responsibility. In 2026, Thelenwood Consulting is focused on integration—bringing together technology providers, airports, cities, and state agencies early enough to design projects that are deployable, sustainable, and accountable.
